Plan Your Activities

In a place as rich with history as Charleston, SC, you will never be at a loss for what to do. In fact, you will have to come back to complete your must-see checklist! Charleston is the oldest city in South Carolina and was founded back in 1670. It was a significant point in history during the American Revolution, and in 1810, a local resident received the patent for the first soda water. Beyond those interesting bits of history, here is a list to get you started on your historical sightseeing itinerary.

  • Fort Sumter – The first shots of the American Civil War were fired here, but the fort was built in 1814 during what is now called the War of 1812. This long-standing structure was considered a barrier of defense for the city of Charleston and a port of entry for enslaved African people. Take one of the  Fort Sumter Tours that are operated by the National Park Service to learn more about its storied history.

  • International African American Museum – The International African American Museum sits 13 feet above the historic site of Gadsden’s Wharf. This was the arrival point for almost half of all enslaved Africans who were brought to America. Tour the facility or use the genealogical resources to learn about your past. And be sure to check out the website’s calendar for new and upcoming events.

  • The Charleston Museum – The Charleston Museum is a renowned establishment that houses a broad range of interesting artifacts. Founded in 1773, this is America’s first museum, which is history itself. Here, you will find the Civil War submarine H.L. Hunley, which is the first submarine to sink an enemy in war. It was painstakingly restored after being pulled from the waters in the year 2000. View the museum’s armory and then take a step back in time to the Natural History gallery to learn about the fossils found in the Lowcountry.

These are but a few of the informative and interesting places you can visit while in Charleston. There are many more places to see and experience that will suit any interest or age.

Watch this short video for an exclusive walking tour of Charleston’s streets and alleyways.
