Your bags are packed, your documents are in order, and you are ready to go on your adventure! However, are you fit for the journey ahead? Statistics show that 43%-79% of Americans fall ill during their travels. The last thing you would want when on vacation is to have it come to an abrupt end due to your health. This is why visiting your doctor before your trip is a great idea. Below are more reasons why you should consider visiting your doctor before traveling.

To identify and treat any existing health conditions on time

Some illnesses do not show their symptoms immediately. In such cases, such health issues may only be revealed during medical examinations. This means you may seem to be in good health before your trip, but you’re not! Your doctor can identify these issues on time to offer effective solutions to treat the problem before it becomes severe. During these visits, conduct various tests such as blood sugar tests, enhanced breast screening, cholesterol, and Covid-19, among others.

To get the needed medication

If you have an existing health condition, issues such as language barriers, differing laws, and location can make it challenging to get your medications when you travel. Therefore, visiting your doctor before your trip would ensure you get the prescriptions you need before the journey. Additionally, your doctor may give you medications to treat common illnesses that are usually experienced in the location you are traveling. Such preparation is helpful as you do not have to worry about access to the medication if you fall sick during the trip.

To be informed on vaccinations

Although there has been some contention regarding vaccinations, many countries require foreigners to be vaccinated before entering the country. On the other hand, receiving vaccinations ensures you are protected from various diseases, such as yellow fever. Another reason vaccinations are vital before you travel is that they prevent disease transfer over borders. Consulting your doctor before your trip would ensure you are up to date with your vaccinations.

To receive advice on how to stay healthy while traveling

A vacation isn’t a break from practicing good health habits. However, you may not be too keen on doing so because you are on vacation! Your doctor can provide solutions to ensure you have fun during your vacation while ensuring you do not compromise your health. He or She can do so by sharing tips and tricks on staying healthy. Your doctor may also educate you on food and water safety in the location you’re visiting by sharing the telltale signs of contaminated foods and water. Your doctor can also educate you about common ingredients used in some meals, which is vital if you have allergies.

The reasons above should have convinced you to take the important precautionary steps of seeing your doctor before your next trip. So, book your appointment with your doctor for your pre-travel health soon.
