Note: This post is sponsored by Illinois Food Families. All opinions are my own.Win $500 in groceries from Illinois Farm Families

Do you have questions for farmers? Do you wonder where your food is coming from or how it’s grown? Maybe you want to know more about living the life of a farmer. I know I’d like to visit a farm and learn more about what it’s like to live on one. There are days that I just want to walk away from everything I know, get a piece of land and live off of it. Seeing that I don’t know what REALLY goes into farming, that’s a bit frightening! What’s awesome, is right now you can ask questions of farmers on the Illinois Farm Families page and they will answer. Not only that, but you could win some grocery money for asking your questions!

From July 7 to July 31, 2014:

  1. Go to Facebook and LIKE our page.
  2. Comment on a recipe, share your own recipe or food tradition or ask a question.
  3. Our farmers will answer your questions and help you locate resources for further information.

Connect with us on Facebook and we’ll enter your name in a drawing to win one of three prizes:

  • One $500 gift card to Ultra Foods
  • Two $250 gift cards to Ultra Foods

Contest ends July 31, 2014. Winners will be announced by August 15, 2014.

I don’t know about you, but I could ALWAYS use more money for groceries in my house, especially with a girl that wants to snack all day and two growing boys!  Don’t forget, you can also check out my post on Why Farmers Use GMOs and How to Read Food Labels which were also sponsored by Illinois Farm Families. I’m sad to see my time ending as an Illinois Farm Families Ambassador. I hope that they choose me to write for them next year as well. In the meantime: If you could ask a farmer anything, what would you ask?

There’s so much great info to learn from farmers. I am fortunate enough to live in a farming community so it’s very eye opening to talk with them.

This is going to sound silly, but there’s this farmer on the Bachelorette who has been making farm life look so appealing. He’s not appealing, mind you, but something about the life is. I don’t actually have any questions to ask right now though.

We used to have a lot of farming areas down here but unfortunately the land has been bought out and homes were built. Wish they were still around.

Great giveaway. I had to laugh because my kids were clueless how the food gets to the grocery, and I realized I am to blame. I never educated them. Changing that.

I would ask farmers the following questions:

Is it a struggle having to compete against or work with Monsanto? I am not very familiar with this world, and am curious about how much the profession has changed within a generation. I;ve been reading articles about GMO/Monsanto corn being linked with health problems for many people. I hope that we can find a way to sustainably feed the population. It’s a very honorable field to feed others, and I value the farmers who devote so much passion and labor to this craft.

Bonnie, we are farmers who grow corn and soybeans on a family farm about 75 miles southwest of Chicago, near the town of Mazon, IL. To answer your question, we don’t usually find it to be any problem working with Monsanto and their companies. Farmers have choices of seeds and crop protection products from many companies including Monsanto. We choose to plant much of our family farm to Monsanto products because we’ve seen them to be superior to other products we have tried. We personally feel much safer using GMO’s than growing non-GMO’s and applying pesticides to control those pests. However, we respect everyone’s right to choose for themselves.
