Last week my family was invited to see Disney and Pixar’s newest movie, Brave at the Studio Movie Grill in Wheaton. They had just opened that week and they treated us all like royalty! We got tons of appetizers, drinks and dinner on the house. Studio Movie Grill is a really nice movie theater. We’ve been a to a theater before where you eat and watch the movie and the seats were uncomfortable and don’t work well for kids. At SMG the seats are comfortable and have a table that attaches to it that swings out so you have your own personal table. We went back today to see another movie and experience the theater as a normal person. The staff was extremely friendly and the food is really good. I only have two complaints about the theater: 1) they don’t have actual kid friendly cups, they use hard plastic cups with regular plastic lids so they fall off (Buddy dropped his soda all over the place during the movie today because the lid fell off.) 2) They didn’t explain their service button before the movie started. It would have been nice to know that I had to press the button for them to pick up the check when I was ready to pay so I didn’t have to hang out in an empty theater 10 minutes after the show was over to wait for my credit card to be run.
I LOVED the movie Brave! I’m not sure it’s necessarily little kid friendly, though. Little Man actually did the best and he was the youngest. Buddy and Monkey were pretty scared throughout the movie. It is rated PG. I don’t know that it’s really any more scary than any other Disney movie can be. I know that the Shadow Man part in Princess and the Frog was pretty scary the first time the kids saw it. I bet the kids will love Brave when they see it again. There was also a little more “adult” humor. There was a scene where the Dad smacked the Mom on the butt and then another scene where the adult men had to take their kilts off to scale a castle wall and as they walked away you saw their cartoon butts. I actually laughed a LOT during the movie. I felt it was very entertaining. I can’t wait to own this movie and watch it again. I can’t say that about many movies recently. It seems when I sit down to watch anything I need some kind of distraction or I fall asleep. I could watch Brave without needing to multitask. My husband’s biggest complaint was that it was in 3D. He wishes that people would stop making 3D movies until they can do it without the need of glasses. Having to wear regular glasses, it does make it very uncomfortable to wear my 3D glasses on top of them.
I loved how strong Merida is and while I’m not fond of the butt smacking scene for a kids movie, it is nice to show a happily married couple. I loved the back and forth between all the characters and of course the craziness of her little brothers. I definitely recommend the movie, but if your kids get scared easily you need to be prepared to snuggle them or have them hold off until they’re a bit older.
Note: We were given free admission and food at Studio Movie Grill. All opinions are my own.

Thanks for the review. I want to take the girls (and leave little man at home) … this might be a good first movie theater movie for them!

I thought I looked and it was rated G. Is it really PG? Bummer.

That kind of theater is the wave, isn’t it? Kinda cool! Glad you all enjoyed the movie!

Oh thanks for a great review. I can’t wait to see this movie. I’m taking my 11 year old son to see it. Glad you mentioned the rating though. I thought about taking my grandson but he’s only 5 so I’ll let his mom read your review and decide.

Sounds so fun! Can’t wait to see it. If only my toddler would sit through it.

I really liked Brave, too, but I’m going to wait for it to come out on video to let my girls see it. They get scared so easily and they would never have made it through the entire movie at the theater.
I’ve been wanting to check out the Studio Movie Grill down here so I’m glad to hear it’s nice!
