Ralph smashes into theaters this Friday, November 2, 2012. I had the pleasure of taking my kids to see Wreck it Ralph last week at a premiere. I’ve been dying to see this movie since they first started leaking the previews of it. It totally lived up to my expectations. Before I get into it, though, let me tell you about the short at the beginning of the film.
Paperman was such a heartwarming short. There are no words spoken, but the images and music are done so perfectly that it moves you. The kids even really enjoyed the short. It’s romance found by paper. So cute!
Using a minimalist black-and-white style, the short follows the story of a lonely young man (George) in mid-century New York City, whose destiny takes an unexpected turn after a chance meeting with a beautiful woman (Meg) on his morning commute. Convinced that the girl of his dreams is gone forever, he gets a second chance when he spots her in a skyscraper window across the avenue from his office. With only his heart, imagination and a stack of papers to get her attention, his efforts are no match for what the fates have in store for him.
I love how Wreck it Ralph tells you the story of what happens to the characters in the game after the arcade closes. It’s kind of a Toy Story type story line. Ralph is a “bad guy” during his game, but not after work and no one will give him the time of day because he wrecks everything. He’s tired of being the bad guy and goes on a quest to prove he CAN be the good guy. It’s so fun seeing all the old video game characters such as PacMan, Q*bert, and Sonic. There are jokes that older people will get, but they’re not so far over the heads of little ones, either. It was so nice to take my kids into a movie where I didn’t have to worry about them being scared. Monkey gets scared pretty easily and knowing that I was the only adult this time, I was a bit worried that we’d all have to leave because of her. She loved the movie and only covered her eyes at one part. I’m telling you, this movie is a must see! I can’t wait for it to come out on video so I can buy it for our family and watch it over and over again!
You can find out more about Wreck it Ralph on their website, Twitter and Facebook. (By the way, Facebook has some really fun games that you can play!) Here are three coloring sheets for your kids to enjoy until they can go see the movie this weekend.
Note: My family was given passes to see Wreck it Ralph in exchange for this review. All opinions are my own.
