My new friend, Mellisa from Getting All My Ducks in a Row posted a video of Jamie Oliver talking at the TED conference about Food Education. Here is the video if you’d like to take a look.

Here are some key points:

  • Our children will live a life 10 years younger than ours because of the food they are being set up with
  • Diet related disease is the Number One killer in the United States
  • Obesity costs 10% of US healthcare bills
  • Obesity doesn’t just hurt the people that have it, it hurts their loved ones as well (This is a very true statement to me. I lost my mother and sister to diet related diseases.)
  • We need to teach kids about food in schools
  • Each child should walk way from school knowing how to cook at least 10 recipes to be able to be self-sufficient college students and young parents.
  • The foods we are feeding our children at school are fast foods: cheeseburgers, pizza, sloppy joes, etc.
  • Most children will have 2-8 oz servings of chocolate milk at school per day. 1-8 0z serving has almost as much sugar as a can of coke! Examples (8 oz servings):

Chocolate Milk 220 cal 26 grams of sugar

Coca Cola 194.2 cal 26.7 grams of sugar

2% Milk 122 cal 12.4 grams of sugar

  • If one person teaches three people how to cook and they each teach three people how to cook and it repeats itself 25 times that would be the entire population of the United States.

“I wish for everyone to help create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity”

– Jamie Oliver

What do I plan to do?

I know that I have gotten way too relaxed in my cooking routine since my husband went to “second shift.”  My goal, for now, is to make three from scratch meals per week. I want to focus more on what I intended this blog to be, a place to find child friendly recipes- where the children help! I want to eat less fast food (which also fits into my Frugal Friday posts.) I’m already working on this anyway.

I am going to see if I can put together some quick, easy recipe that I can teach my son’s preschool class how to make and talk to his teacher about showing them during class one day. Maybe I can continue to do that after my children leave that school.

Tell me what you plan to do…

About Paula

Paula Krueger considers herself a "baby "chef, not because she cooks for babies, but because she's still learning how to cook. She started this blog after taking Wilton method classes and at that point was more interested in baking. She's since become more interested in learning to cook as her family has grown. She also covers product reviews and travel as well.

Here are two easy recipes that are cheap, homemade, and don’t taste like they come from a can (but they do!)

The first is a very yummy chicken tortilla soup (your kids can crumble the chips!):

The next one is a very quick and delicious black bean soup:

    Enjoy!

This is great info, Paula. I have gotten lax and let my son eat too many school lunches. I need to pack lunch for him more often. Thankfully he is a good listener. At the beginning of the year I told him no chocolate milk, so he only gets white at school. The school also allows them the option to get a fresh baked cookie each day at lunch. I told him he could get a cookie just once a week and he does.

Well, we are some of the educated, so that is good. My hubby is a personal trainer. That doesn’t mean we live everything we know, but when we have kids you can bet we will. In fact, even preparing for kids we are changing our diets around.

I’m all about cooking from scratch. It tastes better too. 🙂
