In August of 2004 my husband and I had to come up to Chicago for his sister’s wedding. (We were living in Kissimmee, FL at the time.) We were spending a week with the family to help prepare with the wedding, be a part of the wedding and then have some more vacation time afterwards. About day two into the trip I had a single spot, I know, tmi. Anyway, I thought that was weird and started thinking… Uhoh! I asked my father in law to stop at Walgreen’s on our way back to the house. I just said I needed to pick something up. I got home and immediately ran upstairs to the bathroom. Um, yup! I was right! I was pregnant!

That test is actually from my pregnancy with my daughter. Anyway, I yelled for Charlie to come upstairs RIGHT NOW! I showed him the test and we were both so excited. A little apprehensive, though. See, we were pregnant on our first anniversary and we were so excited and made plans for that baby. I started painting a Looney Tunes mural on the wall of our old house for it. Then at 12 weeks I lost the baby. So it was a bit scary to put our hopes into new baby. Still, I couldn’t contain it! I went to the local office supply store and picked up blank baby shower/birth announcement cards. I typed up that a new baby was coming to our family in May and wanted to pass them out. Not wanting to take away from my future sister’s-in-law big day, I told her first. I wanted her blessing to tell the family. She was so excited for us she told me to go ahead. So I passed out the birth announcement cards to everyone and watched their faces as they opened them. Not everyone got it at first. I remember my younger sister-in-law squealing and running to give me a hug.

It was definitely an unexpected surprise! We had asked the immediate family not to make a big deal about it at the wedding so we wouldn’t take away from the bride, but people kept coming up to me and congratulating me as the word got out! It was one of the most memorable weeks of my life. Buddy came into our lives 9 months later. 9 pounds, 10 ounces and 21.5″ long. He was a big boy!
