Last week my family and I were invited to see Cars 2, the newest Disney & Pixar release. We’re a huge fan of the movie Cars, so we jumped on a chance to see it.
Star racecar Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) take their friendship to exciting new places in “Cars 2” when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. Mater finds himself torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret mission orchestrated by master British super spy Finn McMissile (voice of Michael Caine) and the stunning rookie field spy Holley Shiftwell (voice of Emily Mortimer). Mater’s action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world. The fast-paced fun includes a colorful new all-car cast, complete with menacing villains and international racing competitors.
Our thoughts on the movie: The movie really captured my attention. My biggest problem was wearing 3D glasses. They’re so uncomfortable and of course the 2 year old wouldn’t even put them on after the movie started. They really laid out an elaborate plot which, I think, most kids wouldn’t understand, but there was plenty of action and fun to keep it interesting to the kids. If you have a problem with plots to kill, cars dying and cars at a bar, this may not be the movie for you. I wasn’t really happy to see the cars dying. It didn’t seem to phase the kids, though. I know some people would have a problem with that so I wanted to let you know up front about it. Although a friend of mine reminded me that all Disney movies have some kind of killing plot or people dying or inappropriate material.
Buddy, the 6 yr old, said he really liked the special agents and bad guys. He said his favorite car was Francesco Bernoulli. (I had to look up which car that was, because I didn’t even remember. Whoops!)
Monkey, the 4 yr old, said she really liked the girl parts. She went into the movie not wanting to watch Cars, but she got into the movie and didn’t really bounce around much until the end.
Little Man, the 2 yr old, said “Like Cars!” Unfortunately he didn’t do as well at the movie. He wouldn’t wear the glasses and wouldn’t sit in his seat. He kept throwing things at the lady in front of me. I was “that mom.” I felt bad, but what could I do? I was there to do a job.
The kids were super excited when they got to see a new short from Toy Story. Buddy couldn’t stop talking about that to friends after the movie.
Set in new owner Bonnie’s bedroom, “Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation” features Woody (voice of Tom Hanks) and Buzz (voice of Tim Allen) and the rest of the favorite “Toy Story 3” toys as they create the ultimate Hawaiian vacation for Ken (voice of Michael Keaton) and Barbie (voice of Jodi Benson). It seems Ken badly miscalculated their travel arrangements, so the gang has to create a dream getaway in Bonnie’s Midwestern bedroom—in the middle of winter. “Hawaiian Vacation” also features the voices of Joan Cusack, Wallace Shawn, Don Rickles, Estelle Harris, Blake Clark, Bonnie Hunt, Timothy Dalton, Kristen Schaal, Jeff Garlin and John Ratzenberger.
Another thing that really excited me is there’s going to be a new Muppet Movie! My sister loved the Muppets and she would have been so happy. She had a tattoo of Kermit on her ankle.
