So I decided to start off my holiday cookie baking with something easy…. at least I thought!

Ingredients:

  • Pre-made sugar cookie dough or your own recipe
  • egg yolks
  • food coloring

Directions

  1. Roll our your cookie dough (I found a trick for this: place your cookie dough between 2 pieces of parchment paper. You can’t use both hands to roll, but the dough does not stick to anything and makes it so much easier to work with!) Make sure your dough is thin… I think this is what caused my fail!
  2. Cut out your shapes
  3. Mix an egg yolk with 4 drops of food coloring.
  4. Paint to your heart’s content painted sugar cookies
  5. Bake according to directions

I’m not exactly sure how to make this work better. The first batch I think my biggest problem was that I made the dough to thick so it expanded too much. The second two batches didn’t expand as much but still didn’t hold their shape. Any suggestions for me?

Hi Paula! You need to make sure your dough is rolled, cut, and painted very cold. That helps hold the shape.

if you dont want your cookies to expand you can try the No Fail Sugar Cookie recipe! it does not expand and works perfect for shaped cookies

I don’t have a clue on how to help you…but I think it looks like the kids had fun so that’s all that matters…right?

I think they look cute! But if you don’t want them to expand, they need to be cold before going into the oven. The recipe I use, you have to refrigerate for a few hours, roll out, cut out shapes and while the dough is still cold bake them. That never seems to happen for me so, I roll out between parchment paper, put back in the fridge & then cut out shapes and immediately put into the oven. Here’s the recipe I use: http://www.thelittlekitchen.net/2010/02/11/valentines-themed-cookies/

if they were still edible they were not a fail! LOL! the kiddos had fun! I never tried w/pre-made dough only the ‘hard’ way, and you do have to keep it in the fride, only roll out what you are working with. so I guess I agree with JulieD even tho I didn’t know that was the answer! LOL!!
