I’d love that suit and shoes for Brandcation and my exercise classes. My water shoes were cheap and fell apart the first class I wore them at. I’d never seen water shoes that looked like these until I went to class last week. Only 48 more days to get into shape! I need to get to those water classes more often! Are you going to virtually shop this weekend at Land’s End? What will you get?

Mimi’s Cafe Topped their Goal for Go Red!

Mimi's Cafe, heart research, American Heart AssociationYou may remember I posted about having lunch at Mimi’s Cafe for the Go Red for Women event. I just wanted to give you a little update. Mimi’s raised $181,864, topping its year-one goal by 20%! I’m so glad that I got to be part of that total! MIMI’S CAFE® TOPS GOAL FOR GO RED FOR WOMEN MOVEMENT

More than $180,000 raised in 29 days

In February, Mimi’s Cafe launched a national awareness and fundraising drive as the first restaurant to support the AHA’s Go Red For Women movement on a national scale.  Thanks to the heartfelt support of guests, staff, friends and supporters, Mimi’s® raised $181,864, topping its year-one goal by 20%. Go Red For Women’s mission is to uncover the truth about women and heart disease and empower them to lead heart-healthy lives.
“We couldn’t be more appreciative of the generosity of our guests and our teammates in making our first campaign for Go Red a success,” explains Mark Mears, Mimi’s President and Chief Concept Officer. “The bottom line is Mimi’s Cares, and our guests often are first in line to support causes they care deeply about. The AHA’s Go Red For Women is making a difference in our lives.”

Throughout the month, Mimi’s guests in 145 locations had the opportunity to display a red heart-shaped tribute card on an iconic red dress display with a $1 donation. With a $5 donation, they also received a red dress lapel pin with 100% of all donations going to the American Heart Association.

Tassimo Recall

Tassimo, Brewbot, What Can I get for you?, recallAs you may remember, I wrote a review about Tassimo. I just found out that they are recalling about 835,000 coffee makers in the United States; another 900,000 in Canada. The agency also announced the recall of 4 million packages of Tassimo espresso T-discs. It turns out that the plastic disc can burst while the hot water is going through it causing second degree burns on a reported 140 people.

That’s pretty scary to me seeing that my children can run through my kitchen up to 10 times while I’m brewing a single cup of coffee. I would not want any of them to deal with serious burns from this machine.

Tassimo has issued a safety recall, though and is sending out a replacement part for the machine to take care of the problem. You can check the Tassimo Safety Recall site for details and to find out if your machine or discs are included. My machine was, but none of the T-discs I had on hand were. I just wanted to send out a buyer-beware since I recommended this product. I don’t want anyone to get hurt!

INTRODUCING STRIIV: A SLEEK PORTABLE DEVICE THAT MAKES FITNESS FUN; LAUNCHING THIS FALL

Silicon Valley Start-Up Unveils Product that Motivates and Rewards Exercise through Games, Challenges and Donations

REDWOOD CITY, CA, August 31, 2011 – Fitness is about to become a lot more fun with Striiv. The Silicon Valley-based start-up today revealed its first product which takes active gaming outside of the living room to turn everyday activities into fitness opportunities.  A sleek, portable fitness device, Striiv motivates activity throughout the day via games, personal goals, and donation opportunities — all powered by physical activity.

Striiv offers a playful approach to fitness. Comprised of social game and technology industry veterans, the team behind Striiv brings a wealth of business and development experience to defining this new product category at the forefront of gaming and personal health.  Whether it’s a real workout or simple daily interactions like walking to lunch, taking the stairs, or shopping – with Striiv any activity is earned, tracked and transformed into an opportunity to get fit, give back, and have fun.

“Fitness and health are top-of-mind today. But for many people, especially moms juggling careers and family, finding time for exercise is hard to fit in to a busy day,” says David Wang, CEO and co-founder of Striiv. “We’ve combined charities, gaming, and personal challenges with cutting-edge technology to create a seamless way to motivate physical activity.  We’re building a playful and inspiring ‘movement around movement’ so that fitness now fits throughout your day. ”

Small, convenient and designed to easily move between a key chain, belt clip, or pocket, Striivis always with you and always on.  Striiv features a high-resolution color touch screen to track your progress.  Key features include:

  • ·         Walkathon in Your Pocket:  With Striiv every step counts toward a donation to charity.  At launch, Striiv is partnering with GlobalGiving to donate clean water to children in South America or a polio vaccine to a child in India. New charitable partners will be added over time.
  • ·         Activity-Based Games: Unlike traditional time-based social games, Striiv games are completely powered by physical activity. In the first game, MyLand, the more you move, the more your enchanted island fills with exotic wildlife and plants. More games will be added.
  • ·         Daily Challenges and Trophies: Earn rewards and bonuses for walking to lunch or taking the stairs. Unlock daily challenges based on real-world distances, from climbing the Eiffel Tower to crossing the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • ·         TruMotion Technology: Striiv’s proprietary TruMotion technology is always on and can sense if you are walking, running, and even climbing stairs or hiking.

Striiv is designed to be used directly out of the box, no set up required. Tutorials are built into the device. Additionally, Striiv can be connected to an online portal via a computer USB port to upgrade new applications, charities, and games, or post updates to Facebook.

Striiv launches in mid-October for $99. To pre-order Striiv, visit www.striiv.com.

Join Rachael Ray and Drive to End Hunger

Rachael RayIn a new public service campaign, the best-selling author and TV personality encourages people to take action to fight hunger among older Americans

Los Angeles, Calif. – Entertainment Industry Foundation Ambassador, author and television personality Rachael Ray is lending her support to a new public service campaign aimed at ending hunger for the more than six million Americans over the age of 50 who struggle to put food on the table every day. The new campaign supports Drive to End Hunger, AARP and AARP Foundation’s nationwide effort to end hunger among older Americans by calling on people of all ages to donate time, money or food to local hunger relief organizations.

“Many older Americans are trying to make ends meet by eating cheaper, less healthy foods or skipping meals altogether,” Rachael said. “The issue of hunger in America is very important to me. This is a problem we can solve if we all work together.  But we have to start now.”

Drive to End HungerThe PSA campaign will run in print and on broadcast outlets, as well as in out-of-home placements, for the next 12 months. Ray is a longtime anti-hunger advocate, who, through her foundation The Yum-O! organization, empowers kids and their families to develop healthy relationships with food and cooking by teaching families to cook, feeding hungry kids and funding cooking education and scholarships.

“We are so pleased to collaborate with Rachael, who has worked tirelessly in recent years to raise awareness of the problem of hunger in this country and how we can all be part of the solution,” said AARP Foundation President Jo Ann Jenkins, who spearheads the Drive to End Hunger initiative. “She is helping us shine a spotlight on older Americans, who often struggle silently with hunger and are forced to make the devastating choice between food and other basic needs, like housing or medications.”
