Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure® Day 3 and Wrap Up #the3day #keepgoing

Engergizer Keep Going Blogger

Well it sure took me a long time to get back to this. I’m so sorry to those that were waiting to hear how I did on day 3! I went on vacation immediately following closing ceremony on Sunday. Every time I’d sit down to write while on vacation I just couldn’t focus. So here it is, my day 3 and wrap up of the event:

Day 3 I was woken up by campers who were getting up and starting to pack at 5am. They didn’t care that everyone’s tents are paper-thin and you can hear every single word you’re saying. It was all good, though, I got up, got dressed and packed. I had to wait around for my tent-mate to get up, though, so I could get my tarp out from under the tent. Got everything brought over to where you drop your luggage and headed to breakfast. I ate and stretched and headed to medical. I was determined to walk that day! I got in there and the doc was trying to talk me into taking two puffs of Albuterol to get the day going but I refused since both days I took it I got an immediate migraine. I promised him I would stop if I needed for any reason at all. He took my red card away and gave me back my credentials. YAY!!

ParamedicsI headed over to get on the bus to take us to the beginning of day 3! I was pumped! I got on the bus across from a survivor. It was so nice to hear her story and hear again what we’re doing this for! The walk started off beautiful Sunday morning because it was very overcast. It meant it was not hot and I was not sweating. Making it to lunch was a piece of cake. Although, sometime before lunch the skies opened up and it started pouring on us. The rain didn’t really bother me so much as the wind. They don’t call it the windy city for nothing! I actually started getting cold from the wind but I kept on keeping on. Then all of a sudden I felt a sharp pain in the arch of my left foot. I tried to just walk it out but it wasn’t happening. I hopped on the sweep golf cart to get brought to the next pit stop (it was only one mile away). They had golf carts out that day because the majority of our walk was down the shore of Lake Michigan where cars could not drive. There was actually one team of paramedics that wore bright pink sweat suits and had a huge sound system on their golf cart. It was awesome because everyone around you would start dancing as they drove past.

Anyway, back to my foot. I got swept to the next stop and got both feet taped up to stop further damage and continue on my walk. I refused to give up this time! I had met a walking buddy earlier in the day and had to leave her when I was swept. I ran into her again at the final pit stop so we were able to finish the day out together. I have to say, it was so much easier to walk with a buddy, but you need one that walks the same pace as you.

Walking into holding was not something that you can describe. To know you finished the walk (even if you did only walk 27 out of 60 miles) is amazing. Everyone is there cheering you in. As I was walking down the aisle of cheering people I saw my med team and they looked so proud of me. It just felt simply amazing!

Closing ceremonies were great. It was extremely hot by that time of the day, though, and we’re supposed to wear our long sleeved t-shirts. OUCH! I’m not sure why they couldn’t hold the ceremonies inside Soldier Field, that would have been great to not be out in the beating sun. First all the walkers walked in and formed a circle, followed by all the volunteers for the weekend (they were amazing!) and then we had a circle of survivors in the middle. We did our one shoe salute and I think almost everyone there was crying! We had a final wrap up from our sponsors and we got to hear Candy Coburn sing Pink Warrior one more time.

Overall I was just so in awe of how the weekend came together and how amazing the volunteers and cheering people along the routes were. I will probably do a Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure® walk again in the future. I may not do Chicago next time just because it’s the same weekend that we go to Wisconsin Dells every year.

When I got home from vacation I found that my friends had “tagged” my house because they were so proud of my walk. I can’t express how good it feels to have supporters at home!

I want to thank Energizer for giving me the opportunity to walk the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure® walk and Keep Going® even when I felt I couldn’t any more. I also want to thank New Balance for supplying me with a pair of New Balance 760 walking shoes.

New Balance will contribute 5% of the suggested retail price of sales from the Lace Up for the Cure® Collection with a guaranteed minimum donation of $500,000 each year to Susan G. Komen for the Cure® through 2012.

I also want to remind you one more time to “like” the Energizer Bunny on Facebook because for every person that does, Energizer will donate $1 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, up to $15,000!

Sigh, another day red carded. :( I got up this morning and headed over to the med tent to be cleared to walk. I should say I hobbled over to the tent! I actually got up this morning around 3:30am to hit the port-a-potties and practically had to crawl there. I could NOT stand up. I feared I was going to fall over and smother my poor tent-mate as I tried to stand. I was laying there this morning when I couldn’t stand up trying to figure out how I would let someone know I couldn’t get up after everyone left their tent. I could picture myself private tweeting @the3day saying “I am stuck in tent D-15, please help!” I can not stress the importance of STRETCHING! DO IT ALL THE TIME!! So anyway, I got to med this morning and she asked me how I was. I told her my lungs hurt from all the coughing and she made me do a breathing treatment and said she couldn’t send me out today. I was pretty upset but knew it was the best for me. I asked if I could take a ride in a sweep van to get that experience of the weekend but she said unfortunately since I was red-carded I could only get on the bus to lunch and then come back with the other walkers not walking after lunch.

I’ll have to say, I had no idea how many people actually don’t do the whole 60 miles! The important part is that you raised the money and you are HERE to support these people that can’t be here themselves! You do what YOU can do, that’s what I keep being told. (Thank you EVERYONE for your support!) It can feel very lonely as a solo walker, especially when you don’t feel support from some people you are closest with. The awesome thing is, these other walkers here with you: THEY support you! THEY lift you up when you feel you can’t walk one more mile, one more step. The support here is JUST amazing.

Winner of the Keep Going® Spirit award on Friday

Jackie Miller, winner of the Keep Going® Spirit award on Friday

Last night when the last two walkers of the evening walked up we ALL got up and welcomed them to camp! The feeling of camaraderie is amazing. (Have I said amazing a lot the past two days?) Last night the Energizer Bunny® visited the camp and we also handed out the Keep Going® award. I got my one minute of fame while I got to stand on stage and pull a name out of the pink trash can. :) The Keep Going® goes to a walker that has been nominated as a walker that embodies the spirit of the Energizer Bunny®.  We will be giving another award out at tonight’s events. I’m hoping the Energizer Bunny® makes an appearance tonight as well because I’d like to get my picture taken with him before the weekend ends!

First Walkers in at lunch

First Walkers in at lunch

This morning morning I was bussed over to the lunch stop and was able to watch as the first walkers got there. The first walkers got there somewhere around 9am. That is some super fast walking! I wish I would have caught their names, I would have nominated them for the Keep Going® spirit award!

Tonight we get to hear a concert from Candy Coburn. She sings the song Pink Warrior which is the official song of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure®.

AMTA Team

AMTA Team

Energizer and AMTA is offering free chair massages at the Energizer tent today. I got one done. It was my first ever real massage! After not being able to stand this morning, it felt amazing to get my back massaged! He warned me to drink LOTS of water to flush the acids that were released from the massage.

Energizer TentI also wanted to talk a little about the two wonderful people I’ve worked with here in the Energizer tent. Sandy is amazing! She has an awesome Keep Going® spirit and she’ll break into dance at any moment. Chris is hilarious! He keeps singing and striking a pose. I will definitely miss hanging out at the Energizer tent when I “go home” tomorrow. I’m actually headed straight to vacation in the Wisconsin Dells straight from closing ceremony!

Even though I’ve not walked as far as I would have hoped, I’ve REALLY enjoyed this weekend. I’ve enjoyed meeting new people and hearing their stories and why they Keep Going® .

Opening CeremonyDay 1! What an inspirational start to the weekend! We started off with all our sponsors saying a few words to get us pumped up and then a stretch. Then came out people carrying the flags reminding us of why we walk. I immediately started crying. They reminded us that “Everyone deserves a lifetime!” I’m walking for my friend Benah because SHE deserves a lifetime of moments with her beautiful family!

I cried the whole way out the gate as people cheered us on:

I started off making great time. Pit stops were spaced approximately 3 miles apart. They had these graham cracker peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that I fell in love with! I know I was hydrated enough because every time I got approximately 1 mile from a stop I had to go! I was averaging 2.75 miles an hour today. The people in the neighborhoods were great! They were cheering us on, passing out treats, water and even giving little “tattoos.”

Unfortunately I’ve been fighting bronchitis or a very icky cough the past week and a half and the last 2 miles of the morning was very hard for me. My lungs tightened up and I could feel the mucus down in my lungs. I got to the lunch stop, grabbed my lunch and immediately headed to the medical tents. They were wonderful! They took awesome care of me. I took two puffs of albuterol and while it cleared out my lungs it gave me an immediate headache. They had me lay down and take a nap. While I was laying there they also rubbed some stuff on the back of my leg because my muscle tensed up bad. They also took care of the hot spots on my feet. Let me tell you, I was a MESS when I walked into medical.

Because of my chest tightness and headache they stripped me of my credentials for the night. I was not able to finish the walk today. I did make it 11 miles! That’s the furthest I’ve ever walked in one stretch. I was pretty close to tears sitting on the bus, though. I felt like I’ve failed so many people by not making it the full 20 miles today.

Energizer TentI got to camp and set up my tent and switched to flip flops! Ah fresh air on my feet! I grabbed some dinner. The food today has been amazing. We had our choice of turkey or ham sandwiches for lunch and dinner was grilled steak, green beans, red potatoes, salad, bread and apple pie! I haven’t eaten that way since New Orleans. I’m now sitting at the Energizer tent doing my blogging :) Energizer is offering portable cell phone chargers to people to walk around with their cell phones so they can recharge and still be able to connect! They’re also allowing people to get online and asking them to “like” The Energizer Bunny® on Facebook. For every person that likes The Energizer Bunny®, Energizer will give $1 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Their goal is 15,000 fans. So PLEASE click on like and share with your friends!

Tomorrow Energizer will be giving massages provided by the AMTA organization. I can’t wait to take advantage of that! Since having dinner, some Excedrin migraine medicine and relaxing I am re-charged and ready to walk tomorrow! Hopefully my lungs cooperate and I can make it all 20 miles!

Training July 24-30 #the3day #keepgoing

Wow, where did this week go?! I should have been working hard to train for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure® walk and I didn’t make it to the gym once. Last weekend, though, at Bloggers on Bourbon I think I walked near 30 miles that weekend! I know for a fact that I walked near 5 miles just from Harrah’s casino, through the ghost tour and back to the hotel. (I was trying to track the walk on my phone. The battery died at over 4 miles.) That was just one fraction of the weekend! There was still airport walking, dancing, walking at the plantation, shopping in the French Market, etc.

I found out some news this week. My friend, Benah (rhymes with Dana), has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I am now dedicating my walk to her. I want to find a cure for her. She has two small children and an awesome husband. The world can not afford to lose Benah! She is a beautiful woman inside and out and a fighter. She will kick cancer’s butt! If you would like to show some support for Benah, you can find her on twitter.

I can not believe that my walk is 6 days away!! This week I am going to do my best to make it to the gym every day. I also have to pack for myself for the walk, pack my whole family for the Wisconsin Dells, pack myself for the Dells and make a cake for Thursday.

Hope everyone else is doing well on their training! Right now Tesa Nicolanti is walking the 3-Day for the Cure® walk in Cleveland. Head over and tell her you support her!
