Sandra Lee Summer Carnival Experience #bySandraLee
Two weeks ago I was invited to go to New York City to meet Sandra Lee and see her new collection that is debuting at Sears and Kmart. It was my first time to New York City and I was super excited! To be honest, I’d never heard of Sandra before the invite came in. After researching and meeting her, though, she’s definitely earned another fan! Before I get too far ahead of myself, I’ll share my trip with you.
They sent a car to bring me to the airport. (I made sure to take Dramamine first! I don’t do well in the backseat of a car.) I got to the airport and checked in for my flight. The flight was pretty uneventful. I was not overly impressed with American Airlines, but that has nothing to do with this post.
We flew right over the Statue of Liberty and that was awesome! I teared up a little thinking of all the people that came to this Country and that was the first thing they saw.
The fun began when I landed in New York and had to ride in the back of another car. Ugh! I thought that driving in Chicago was bad. Driving in Chicago, compared to NYC is like driving in the suburbs! I was totally surprised I didn’t lose it in the back seat of the guy’s car! I got to our beautiful hotel and unpacked and decided to take a shower. Downside? The hotel had already turned off the heat because it was in the 90s in NYC the week before. I think it was in the 60s when I got there. My room was COLD! I then went downstairs to start meeting all the ladies coming down to go to dinner.

We went to Cafe Centro for dinner. They had a ton of appetizers, I liked the chicken rollups the best, and some drinks to get us started. When we sat down to dinner we got a salad for the appetizer. I didn’t like the salad, but the bread that came with it was awesome, along with the rest of dinner. I had the marinated hangar steak with mushroom mashed potatoes. It was delicious! I found another girl that doesn’t like chocolate! I will eat it, but if I have a choice, chocolate would not be number one on my list! My chocolate flourless cake was a little too on the chocolate side for me, but not overly bad. It was awesome to hear Mark Bonchek who is the SVP of communities and networking for Sears talk. He is so far ahead of everyone when it comes to social media. I’d love to just sit and listen to him for hours.
The next morning we got up bright and early, packed, ate breakfast and got on a bus to go visit Sears in New Jersey. We went to see the Sears home line collection. We had demonstrations from Keurig, Dolce Gusto, KitchenAid, SodaStream, and Hamilton Beach. It was fun to learn from these companies. I’ve got a Keurig to review and I’ve already reviewed SodaStream. I’d never tried Dolce Gusto before, though. My inlaws bought me a KitchenAid mixer a few years ago. They showed us their pasta maker and I totally want one. They also showed us their food processor and I’ve decided it’s time to start learning how to use mine.

Next we headed over to The Kitchen back in NYC to finally meet Sandra Lee. We first hit the red carpet to take pictures with Sandra. I was first in line and walked up to Sandra to introduce myself and get my picture taken. I walked up to her to introduce myself and said “Hi, I’m Paula.” She said, “I know! I recognized you!” I did a double take and stood there stunned that Sandra Lee recognized me. She fixed my clothes that were kind of all over the place from traveling all morning and we took a picture. We got into the room and got to have lunch and get a preview of all her new products. Sandra came in and told us about herself and then told us that she’d actually stayed up the night before learning about US! She went through our blogs and wrote questions down to ask each of us. How awesome is that? It was fun to learn a little something about everyone I’d just spent the past day with.

We were then split into groups of three to create our own Tablescapes. Kimberly from She Scribes was on my team. Unfortunately I’m horrible with names and can’t remember the other woman’s name! She was awesome, though, and I was so appreciative to have her on our team! She plans parties for a living, so she was very good at Tablescaping. It’s still an area I lack in! We had fifteen minutes to get our tables together and then Sandra came by to critique. She really liked ours!

After that we were supposed to have a cooking session with Sandra and decorate cupcakes, but we ran out of time so she talked to us a bit about her new products and why she made them the way she did. Did you know it took 14 months to finalize her line?! We then had some drinks with her and got to mingle a bit more. I liked the three pictured: California Lemonade, Meringue Margarita and Strawberry Licious Daquiri. I think the Meringue Margarita was my favorite. I’ll be sharing her drink recipes over the next few weeks. All of a sudden it was open season on her products! We were allowed to take home anything we could carry home. I didn’t go super crazy. I got her grater that is attached to a measuring cup, veggie scrubber, Red Cast Iron Casserole, and her Indoor/Outdoor Electric Grill. I was SO excited that I got that grill. You have no idea! Well, you also do not know how disappointed I was to get home, open my suitcase and found that TSA had gone through my bag and broken the grill’s platform into pieces. I felt like crying! I will definitely be replacing that, because I wanted it so badly!
As I was walking up the stairs to leave, I heard someone yell out my name. I turned to see who it was and it was Sandra! She wanted to be sure she said goodbye to me. It felt like I was leaving behind a good friend that I’d never talk to again. She was so sweet and down to earth! I hope someday to meet her again.

JCPenney Family Portraits Special

Are you looking to get some family portraits taken? JC Penney Portraits Studio is having a great deal this month. Their April promotion of $20 for 6 traditional portrait sheets (mix and match size and images) as well as one free $9 sitting fee. (Portraits must be 10×3 or smaller.) What a great way to get some updated family pictures. Did you just have a baby? I know a few friends that have! I know it’s time for my family to get updated portraits done. We haven’t had any done in over a year. I was just going through pictures of the first day of 1st grade for Buddy and can’t believe how much he’s grown this past school year! As children, they change so fast! Don’t miss it by not keeping up on photos.
Do you need portrait inspiration? I started a JC Penney portrait inspiration board on Pinterest with some poses and background ideas. Needs some ideas to prep for your pictures? Here’s some ideas to start with:
Tips for preparing for your Portraits:
Dress for Portrait Success
*Keep clothing simple. Try to choose solid colors for your portraits. Avoid large, bold patterns such as plaids and stripes. Remember, bright colors also draw attention away from your face.
*Avoid short sleeves and tank tops. Long sleeves will draw attention away from your arms and helps bring the focus back to your face.
*jcpportraits’ photographers may suggest a full-length pose. Make sure you coordinate portrait clothing from head to toe.
*Darker clothing slims. Choose shades of black, brown, blue, dark green and other jewel-toned colors. Light tones tend to emphasize body size.
*Scoops or v-necks flatter shorter necks and full faces. Turtlenecks or high-necked garments flatter longer necks and slender faces.
*Keep clothing consistent. Dress everyone in the same style. Don’t mix casual and formal clothing in portraits.
Coordinate Colors
*Wear light on white. Light pastel or white clothing looks best against a light-colored or white portrait background.
*Wear dark on dark. Dark clothing looks best against darker backgrounds and creates a more formal mood in portraits.
*Don’t mix light and dark colors in portraits. Show your style in small accents. Save stronger colors and patterns for accessories like scarves and neckties.
Props and Backgrounds
*Ask your photographer for advice. If you’re not sure what you want in your portrait, jcpportrait photographers can help you choose a portrait background that suits your needs.
*Add in your personality. Bring your own props for a personal touch. Consider items such as baby blanket, stuffed animal, or a special toy.
When Buddy was a baby he had a special blanket that he wouldn’t leave anywhere. (He still sleeps with it.) I got pictures taken with him and that blanket. By the time we had gotten to those photos he had had enough picture taking so I gave him his blankie to calm down. Of course, after that he wouldn’t give it up. My suggestions: if you’re bringing a baby for pictures, let the baby have a nap first and make sure they’re well fed. Pictures can take a long time, so have snacks and a drink with for them. Even if the picture taking itself goes well and fast, it does take a while for them to pull up your photos to choose from. Don’t tense up! I know you want the perfect shot, but if Mama’s stressed out, the child will sense it and not be happy and natural in the photos!
“I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of jcpenney Portrait Studio. I was asked to create a Pinterest Board and pin at least five (5) pins. I give jcpenney the right to repin any or all images/original content from this board. I received a promotional item as a thanks for my participation.
Announcing my pregnancy- My Unexpected Moment! #sogoodsosweet
In August of 2004 my husband and I had to come up to Chicago for his sister’s wedding. (We were living in Kissimmee, FL at the time.) We were spending a week with the family to help prepare with the wedding, be a part of the wedding and then have some more vacation time afterwards. About day two into the trip I had a single spot, I know, tmi. Anyway, I thought that was weird and started thinking… Uhoh! I asked my father in law to stop at Walgreen’s on our way back to the house. I just said I needed to pick something up. I got home and immediately ran upstairs to the bathroom. Um, yup! I was right! I was pregnant!
That test is actually from my pregnancy with my daughter. Anyway, I yelled for Charlie to come upstairs RIGHT NOW! I showed him the test and we were both so excited. A little apprehensive, though. See, we were pregnant on our first anniversary and we were so excited and made plans for that baby. I started painting a Looney Tunes mural on the wall of our old house for it. Then at 12 weeks I lost the baby. So it was a bit scary to put our hopes into new baby. Still, I couldn’t contain it! I went to the local office supply store and picked up blank baby shower/birth announcement cards. I typed up that a new baby was coming to our family in May and wanted to pass them out. Not wanting to take away from my future sister’s-in-law big day, I told her first. I wanted her blessing to tell the family. She was so excited for us she told me to go ahead. So I passed out the birth announcement cards to everyone and watched their faces as they opened them. Not everyone got it at first. I remember my younger sister-in-law squealing and running to give me a hug.

It was definitely an unexpected surprise! We had asked the immediate family not to make a big deal about it at the wedding so we wouldn’t take away from the bride, but people kept coming up to me and congratulating me as the word got out! It was one of the most memorable weeks of my life. Buddy came into our lives 9 months later. 9 pounds, 10 ounces and 21.5″ long. He was a big boy!
