In Memory of Safa: Safa’s Smile Myasthenia Gravis Fundraiser Walk

Last weekend while hanging out with some girlfriends at Six Flags we got some awful news. Our friend’s daughter, Safa, was in the hospital in critical condition. She was 6.5 years old. Safa had a condition called Myasthenia Gravis. It attacks the muscles in your body and weakens then. As you can see in Safa’s picture on the left, it started with her eye. Her mom took her to the doctor and the first response was that she was doing it on purpose, making her eye sag. Her mom, ever the advocate, said that is NOT what my daughter is doing and took her to another doctor. She then found out that Safa had Myasthenia Gravis. She did special treatments with her and even gave her a surgery to remove the thymus gland because it’s supposed to help with the condition.

Safa’s mom, still the advocate for Safa and the disease planned a walk to help raise awareness of Myasthenia Gravis. She actually planned two; one in Ohio where they currently live, and one here in Illinois where we all knew them. No one knew what was to come last Saturday, though. You see, the Myasthenia Gravis attacked and weakened Safa’s heart. Unfortunately, at 6.5 her heart gave out. It had stopped for 30 minutes before they got it started again. Unfortunately, it was too late. I feel so badly for Safa’s family. She left behind a 3.5 yr old brother. I know I couldn’t imagine telling David that his big sister had died. I just can not imagine the grief that her family is going through! I have been crying daily since finding out about Safa.

I’m helping the only way I know how. I’m writing this post and walking in the walk. My group is trying to raise $500 in order to help find a cure for this disease. Safa was one of the sweetest little girls I’ve ever met. I can’t believe she’s gone. Look at this letter she wrote:

Here’s a little about Myasthenia Gravis:

Myasthenia Gravis (pronounced My-as-theen-ee-a Grav-us) comes from the Greek and Latin words meaning “grave muscular weakness.” The most common form of MG is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that is characterized by fluctuating weakness of the voluntary muscle groups. The prevalence of MG in the United States is estimated to be about 20/100,000 population. However, MG is probably under diagnosed and the prevalence may be higher. Myasthenia Gravis occurs in all races, both genders, and at any age. MG is not thought to be directly inherited nor is it contagious. It does occasionally occur in more than one member of the same family.

For more info, visit the Myasthenia Gravis site.

Here are some common signs to watch for:

  • A drooping eyelid
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Slurred speech
  • Difficulty chewing and swallowing
  • Weakness in the arms and legs
  • Chronic muscle fatigue
  • Difficulty breathing

Please, please consider donating in memory of Safa. My walk is 9/29. I don’t have long to raise money. I just want to raise as much awareness about this as possible. Please donate to Sweet Safa.

Taking Donations for Operation Precious CARgo #ChevyCARgo

A few of my fellow Chicago bloggers: Melisa, MJ, and Dwana are taking part in Operation Precious CARgo. It’s a special program put together by Chevy to collect registry items for a deserving, expecting Military Mom. Melisa is collecting items from the list (below) between now and March 22. There will be a baby shower event on March 17th in Naperville. I’ll be going to that event and would love to show the love from my blog followers. If you’d like to get me some stuff to bring to the baby shower, please email me at paula at frostedfingers dot com. Here is the list of items needed:

Diapers (sizes 4, 5 or 6)
Baby wipes
Bottles
Pacifiers
Blankets
Baby soap and baby lotion
Lanolin cream
Burp cloths
Onesies (gender-neutral)
Socks
Hats
Newborn lounger pillow
Hand sanitizer
Medical kit – thermometer, mini-nail clippers, bulb syringe, etc.
Hooded towel and washcloth
Sensory toys and/or stuffed animals

Here are all the ways Melisa is collecting items:

1. Save the date for Saturday March 17th! She will be at Chevrolet of Naperville, located at 1515 W. Ogden Avenue in Naperville (like the name says!), from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., hosting a very (very) (very) casual “baby shower”. She would love to feed you sweets when you come by, and chat with you for a spell. We won’t play ANY of those stupid baby shower games like blind-tasting baby food or guessing how long a piece of yarn we’d need to wrap around a pregnant woman’s stomach. She promises. Also, She heard a rumor that She might be making a rainbow cake that day.

2. If you know that you can’t make it on March 17th, you’ve got between tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday March 7) and Saturday March 17 at 1:00 to drop off items at the same place, Chevrolet of Naperville. The good folks there will secure the items until she leaves after the baby shower!

3. If you’re in the city, you can email me privately at melisawells(at)gmail(dot)com and she will be able to give you information about a city drop off with either herself or MJ and Dwana. (They haven’t worked those details out yet.)

4. Chevrolet has given her a $100 Visa gift card to use for her baby shower and/or items for the expectant mom. She’s using it all for her.

This sounds like a great program and I’d love to show that my readers can stand behind our military and help out an expectant mom. Please help me, help Melisa, help her. :)

Bright Future International

Have you heard of Bright Future International? I hadn’t either until recently. They currently have a Facebook promotion that if you like their page they will donate $1 to helping children in Kenya, Burundi and Russia. Visit the Bright Future International (BFI) Facebook page and click like.

Bright Future International (BFI) has been providing help to children in Russia, Panama, Rwanda, Kenya and other countries. The mission of BFI is to help children develop vital human qualities: compassion, a feeling of self worth, humility, a desire to help others and social skills. These are the qualities that are not taught in conventional schools and are deficient in many societies.

I can get behind the story of the Bright Future studio in Russia. “There are 100 children studying at Oleg Mityaev’s Bright Future Studio. They are developing their talents through music, acting and art classes taught by teachers who embody the qualities of positivity, compassion and love – which they in turn pass on to the kids. Additionally, the children go on field trips to help provide positive services for the community.” I love anything that teaches children through music. I have a music background myself and believe it’s a universal language! Donations of $15 and more will receive a free DVD of “A Merry Christmas” music video, which features stars like Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Larry King, and more! If you donate to the Bright Future studio in Russia, this is what your donation does:

What your support means:

provides a ticket to a theater performance for 1 child.
provides a tickets for a field trip for 2 children.
provides supplies for 6 months of art classes for 10 children.
provides transportation to Bright Future Studio for 3 days for 10 children.
provides transportation for the Bright Future Studio class to go and perform a charity concert.
provides 1 child with a two-week summer camp where they focus on music, language, and nature.

Please don’t forget to at least go to the Bright Future International Facebook page and like them to have $1 donated to help these children.

Note: I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central for Bright Future International. A small donation to Bright Future International was made in my name from Mom Central as a thank-you for participating.”

Go Red for Women with Mimi’s Cafe #WearRedDay @mimis_cafe

Mimi's Cafe, heart research, American Heart AssociationLast Friday, Mimi’s Cafe had a special Go Red for Women event at their restaurants. They encouraged people to wear red to help raise awareness of the American Heart Association trying to raise funds to help raise money for Women’s Heart Disease. If you wore red, you were able to get a free bowl of soup. If you donate at least $1 you get coupons worth $35 to use at Mimi’s Cafe in the future and if you donated $5 or more you get a red dress pin. The donation part of it is still going on through the month of February.

More women die of cardiovascular disease than from the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. But 80 percent of cardiac events in women could be prevented if women made the right choices for their hearts involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking. Make it your mission to learn all you can about heart attacks and stroke — don’t become a statistic. CALL 9-1-1

My Sister died of a heart attack. It’s an association that’s near and dear to my heart. All women need to learn the signs and know to call 911! Below is a little video about a Mom that helps everyone but herself and ends up having a heart attack. It’s funny, but serious at the same time. Check it out:

I unfortunately forgot to take pictures of my friend and kids and I in red, but we all did wear it! We each donated $5 and got a pin from Mimi’s. We really enjoyed our lunches. My friend had the Tomato Basil soup for her free soup, which she let me taste and it was really good! It had a slight kick to the end, but I would definitely order it for myself in the future. I had the Baked French Onion soup. I really liked the croutons they had in the soup. They were flat and still crispy when you bit into them. I went with the bacon cheeseburger for lunch (way to lower the heart attack risk!) I wasn’t really fond of the barbecue sauce Mimi’s used, but I’m a texture person and it was a bit chunky. My friend had the chicken plate that came with fresh fruit and greens. It looked really good! Monkey wanted Mimi Mouse pancakes with applesauce and Little Man had grilled cheese with fresh fruit. He attacked his food and ate really well. The kids got free dirt cup desserts with their lunches, which none of us were fond of. They tasted like they’d been prepared the day before. The Oreos were moist and smooshy, the pudding was kind of chewy and the worms were not. Besides the so/so desserts, we really did enjoy our lunch.

Join Rachael Ray and Drive to End Hunger

Rachael RayIn a new public service campaign, the best-selling author and TV personality encourages people to take action to fight hunger among older Americans

Los Angeles, Calif. – Entertainment Industry Foundation Ambassador, author and television personality Rachael Ray is lending her support to a new public service campaign aimed at ending hunger for the more than six million Americans over the age of 50 who struggle to put food on the table every day. The new campaign supports Drive to End Hunger, AARP and AARP Foundation’s nationwide effort to end hunger among older Americans by calling on people of all ages to donate time, money or food to local hunger relief organizations.

“Many older Americans are trying to make ends meet by eating cheaper, less healthy foods or skipping meals altogether,” Rachael said. “The issue of hunger in America is very important to me. This is a problem we can solve if we all work together.  But we have to start now.”

Drive to End HungerThe PSA campaign will run in print and on broadcast outlets, as well as in out-of-home placements, for the next 12 months. Ray is a longtime anti-hunger advocate, who, through her foundation The Yum-O! organization, empowers kids and their families to develop healthy relationships with food and cooking by teaching families to cook, feeding hungry kids and funding cooking education and scholarships.

“We are so pleased to collaborate with Rachael, who has worked tirelessly in recent years to raise awareness of the problem of hunger in this country and how we can all be part of the solution,” said AARP Foundation President Jo Ann Jenkins, who spearheads the Drive to End Hunger initiative. “She is helping us shine a spotlight on older Americans, who often struggle silently with hunger and are forced to make the devastating choice between food and other basic needs, like housing or medications.”

For more information on the PSA campaign, visit www.DriveToEndHunger.org.

Toys for Tots Literacy Story Time at The UPS Store #ToysforTotsLiteracy

Literacy Campaign, The UPS Store

Did you know that The Toys for Tots has a Literacy Campaign? Neither did I! I was asked to find a local celebrity with my blogger friend Alicia from Making Time for Mommy to host a local story time at The UPS Store. The Literacy Program is trying to battle the “summer slide” in children.

According to the National Summer Learning Association, children can lose up to three months of what they’ve learned during the school year over summer break.  This “summer slide” can be even more devastating to children in lower-income families where reading scores are disproportionately affected and access to books during the summer is limited.

To help raise awareness of childhood illiteracy as well as funds to purchase books for children in need, for every online print job customers submit during the month of May, Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. (MBE), franchisor of The UPS Store, will purchase a book for a less-fortunate child.  MBE will donate up to $20,000 worth of books to the Toys for Tots Literacy Program.  Each book is valued at $5.

The UPS Store, Toys for Tots Literacy ProgramLiteracy CampaignThe UPS Store has so many different printing options. I had no idea. I always think of The UPS Store as a shipping place. The kids and I put together an informational flyer to pass out at the event. My son drew a picture of a lady reading books to kids. On the back we included the information about the Toys for Tots Literacy Campaign to pass out to all that came.  I took my son’s picture and scanned it into the computer and threw together the flyer. My intent was to send it in online to get it printed but I kept putting it off and then realized it was too late to get it printed online and get it in time for the event. Submitting and printing through The UPS Store is simple. Just keep in mind that you need 24 hours for your print job or you need to contact the store to make sure they can get it done in time. I think it’s so awesome that The UPS Store is donating a book for every online print job sent in! They can print posters, growth charts, canvas prints from your pictures; you think of it and they can get it done! Mike was our manager at the store and he was extremely helpful and excited that we chose his store for our story time.

Chicken in the Car, The UPS Store, Toys for Tots Literacy Campaign We had Melisa Wells, author of Chicken in the Car and the Car Won’t Go, come read to our children. Melisa was so excited to come and she captured the attention of all the children. The cookies and juice boxes helped a lot as well. She read probably five books to the kids and none of them got antsy until the last one.  I wish I could remember all the books she read, because some of them were funny.

Not only does the store donate a book for every online print job, but they take in store donations as well.  (Those are not all my children shown below donating.) Between the three of my kids, they donated $10 to the campaign from taking out of their charity funds, from their spending money and just money they’ve found laying around the house. As my kids earn allowance, 10% of their income is put aside for charity, 10% to “income tax”, 20% savings and the rest is spending money. The oldest always seems to feel good after giving money. The other two don’t get it yet.
Toys for Tots Literacy Campaign

We really had a good time at the event. I wish more people could have made it, but the traffic on the way to the store was horrible at that time of the day. I had a friend text to say she couldn’t make it in time because of traffic.
