Do you have a hard time finding healthy, nutritious foods for your family? Dominick’s has come up with a program called Simple Nutrition.
Dominick’s and Safeway stores will all have labels on their shelves now pointing out healthy, nutritious foods!
Here’s what you’ll find in our stores:
Tags highlighting up to two key nutrient and ingredient benefits. Items featuring a nutrient benefit are first screened against our SimpleNutrition program criteria. Items that pass the criteria are further evaluated to determine whether they qualify for a SimpleNutrition benefit shelf tag.
Nutrition benefit tags include Made with Whole Grains, Sodium Smart, Good Source of Fiber, Low in Fat, Good Source of Calcium and many more. You’ll also find products tagged with benefits such as Gluten Free and “Organic. Look for the green tags while you shop!
Affordable choices with our Everyday Low Prices and Club Card Specials.
Not all items will qualify for a tag, though. They screen products to ensure they meet nutrition and ingredient criteria and then tag them with up to two key benefit messages.
Here’s how it works:
Generally, individual products tagged with a nutrition benefit message such as “Good Source of Fiber” or “Low in Fat” must first meet the following nutrition criteria*:Total Fat: 13 grams or less per serving
Saturated Fat: 2 grams or less per serving
Cholesterol: 60 milligrams or less per serving
Sodium: 480 milligrams or less per serving for individual products; 600 milligrams or less for meal and main dish products
Beneficial Nutrients: 10% Daily Value or more per serving for vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron, protein or fiber
Sugars: Most products contain limited amounts of sugars. Generally, a baseline amount of sugars is allowed to account for the sugars and carbohydrates found naturally in foods such as milk, grains, fruits and vegetables. Then, a formula is applied to “cap” the total amount of sugars allowed in a particular product category.
Seems like a pretty neat idea! There are 22 benefit messages included in the program encompassing two groups of messages: those that meet lifestyle or dietary needs and those that meet specific nutrition or ingredient criteria.
4 benefit messages for lifestyle/dietary needs: Gluten Free, Organic, Natural and Calorie Smart
18 benefit messages with specific nutrition or ingredient criteria: Sugar Free, Made with Whole Grains, Good Source of Fiber, Sodium Smart, Fat Free, Low Saturated Fat, Low Fat, Good Source of Calcium, Good Source of Vitamin C, Good Source of Vitamin A, Good Source of Iron, 0 Grams Trans Fat, 100% Juice, Low Cholesterol, Good Source of Antioxidants, Good Source of Potassium, Good Source of Folate, Lean ProteinWin It:
